Antonio's dive - time for TV replays
He's one of our most honest players, so I was disappointed to see him resort to a dive and for us to win the match that way. He also went down rather too easily for the penalty against Burnley.
It's very difficult for a referee to make a snap decision, especially when the corollary of not calling a foul is to book the player concerned for simulation. It may be that Antonio's previous good character won him those 2 penalties, but now refs will start to view his tumbles with suspicion.
The answer is so obvious that only the fatheads in the FA could ignore it: simulation should be an offence, and TV replays should be available. That would enable a ref to blow the whistle immediately, including when he didn't think that a player had been fouled, and to ask for the 4th official to review the TV evidence. It would stop much of the diving that goes on and would reward the honest players, which I think Antonio is at heart.

Players dive all the time. I don't really care.

Re: Antonio's dive - time for TV replays
The tv replay would probably tell you that Reid was fouled for the Burnley penalty.
Also that it wasn't a genuine attempt to get the ball and should have been a red card.

Winston Reid was brought down for the penalty in the Burnley match.
Antonio didn't dive yesterday - it was a penalty. Look at the recent Snodgrass one to see what a dive is.

So if we were playing in a cup final you would want that decision to be overturned , and you'd be happy if it was ?

I'd rather have a soft pen and 3 points than get relegated.

Everyone's at it unfortunately. You've got to play the game.

He was trying to spin and shoot and was pulled enough to put him off balance.

Penalty.

Maybe he went down to emphasise the point, but had he tried to stay on his feet, he would have probably skied the shot and not got the penalty. Punishment for being too honest.

we need another dozen controversial game winning penalties awarded to even up the shit we went through last season with bent referees

I'm with Scorch on this one. Everyone else does it so why should we take the moral high ground? Look at Snodgrass last week for Hull - what goes around comes around.

Anyway, was it a dive? Haven't watched any of it on the box.

Sven Roeder 12:26 Sun Dec 18
Re: Antonio's dive - time for TV replays
Just seen it again.
He swivels to shoot and the Hull player grabs his thigh and stops that. He has to fall over as the ref is too dim to see it otherwise.
Oh , and that wasn't a genuine attempt to tackle and as it denied a goalscoring opportunity THAT should have been a red card as well.
Why are we being cheated by refs who have refused to send off a player in both matches this week?
Scandalous

I think I'm right that for penalty decisions the red card for stopping a goalscoring attempt has been dropped.

Re: Antonio's dive - time for TV replays
Sadly it is part of the game nowdays. As much as we desperately need the points at the moment I took no pleasure from yesterday, we were second best in every department and deserved nothing. Any half decent Prem side would have totally dismantled us yesterday and all we would have got back was our ass handed back to us on a plate.

It will happen to us again and it will cost us something in a game and then we will all come back on here and spew bile at the 'cunt ref' having forgotten all about this.

Such is football, sadly.

It was not a pen but who gives a fuck, hhow many points did we lost last year beacuse of shit decisions. What made me laugh was about 10 minutes later when he dived just on the edge on the box, he's not intelligent enough to fool a ref twice!

Re: Antonio's dive - time for TV replays
For what it's worth, I would have a panel of ex pros to review these and any dives to cost the player a 3 match ban and 2 weeks wages. Okay it doesn't help the offended team BUT it would put a stop to diving overnight as I can imagine the two things players don't like it's missing games and shelling out.

Have seen worse pens given. He was held and he dropped to the floor. Fair enough!

A panel of ex pros will seem to favour their own former teams. Well, if ex Liverpool or Man United players are involved anyway.
You'll never get to the bottom of it. A small clip at high speed can tip you over. A body-check can be a foul or part of a contact sport.
Only the most blatant examples can ever be judged as a surety.
If players make mistakes, refs do too.
In the end, for serious decisions, game affecting ones, use to replays with an additional official as they do in Rugby. It still won't be perfect but it'll cut the errors and make players a little less likely to cheat. I hope.
